The end of the summer is here- which means the days will get shorter, the temperatures might drop and LUEWWD board members return to their favorite table at the James Joyce to begin planning for LUEWWD II. There are two big dates coming up that you should mark on your calender. First, on Saturday, September 25th join the LUEWWD board members and wrestlers in celebrating the LGBT community in the annual Pride Parade in Durham. Yes, that’s right! We’re in the process of registering our very own ‘LUEWWD float’! This is new to LUEWWD so it should prove to be quite an adventure. If you’re a float-in-the-parade veteran feel free to email us your ideas! After the parade, follow our float to the Casbah in Durham for an afternoon and evening with Maydnew (you may remember the MC and DJ duo from LUEWWD’s first event) complete with a 4:00 Tea Dance followed by a retro dance party.
In other news, since growing out of our donated space at the James Joyce, we have moved across the street to the Casbah (The Mountie’s new place) and will host LUEWWD II at the new venue on October 16th! This means that we’re looking for contestants. The first 8 people to send their complete registration (LUEWWD name, a bio of 75 words or less, picture, theme song, and a 4-member entourage) to firstname.lastname@example.org will be secured a spot in the bracket. We will keep registration open until the 8 spots are filled or until September 18th.
Lastly, we have confirmed our beneficiary! All proceeds from LUEWWD II will be donated to In-Stepp which is “a dedicated, community-based non-profit company that is passionate about helping our regional communities thrive by empowering at-risk adult women and adolescent girls to succeed personally and professionally through innovative, gender-responsive training, education and prevention services.” There are four main programs at InStepp: employment re-entry assistance for adult women, adult mentoring, life enrichment and self empowerment, and the Girls Leadership Academy.
